Eyeshadow Tips Done Easy

Why do you need eyeshadow tips? Who cares about eyeshadow! You do.

Do I really have to say how important your eyes are when doing your makeup? You already know that your eyes are the first thing (well okay, maybe the second thing) people look at.

This is a difficult topic to cover but let me just say this: It doesn't matter what your style is, applying the right color eyeshadow in the right way will perfect your look. My eyeshadow tips can help.

Eyeshadow Color

Most people say that you should choose a color based on your eye color and skin tone. I agree with this but I think your hair color should also be a consideration.

Don't match your eyeshadow to the exact color of your eyes. Instead choose a color that compliments and gently contrasts your eye color. If you were looking at a color wheel, you would choose the color opposite to your eye color.

Some GENERAL guidelines:

Blue Eyes - shades of brown, peaches, pinks, plums, grays and silvers, blue darker than your eye color.

Green Eyes - purples, plums, browns with yellow undertones, dark forest green.

Brown Eyes - shades of blue, purples, coppers, bronze, forest greens.

Blond Hair - golden browns, lavenders, apricots and corals.

Red Hair - blues, greens , corals and peaches.

Brunette Hair - browns, black, rusty reds, deep purples.

- Shades of black will look good on all eye and hair colors if smudged for a smokey look.

- This is a great time to visit the nice ladies at the makeup counter of your favorite department store. Let a professional put on your eye makeup and ask them to recommend some color combos that would compliment your skin, eyes and hair for day and evening looks. Application Tips

The key to a great eyeshadow application is a good brush. For the longest time I used those little applicators that came with the eyeshadows. I thought it was a pain to use different brushes to apply different colors. I was wrong. It's worth it to use good brushes. You'll get a much smoother application and your colors will blend easier.

1. Apply foundation before your eye makeup.

2. Use an eyeshadow primer, or base, on your lids to prepare your lids for color. This will prevent the color from fading and creasing.

Brands to try:

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Eyeshadow Base

L'Oreal De-Crease Eye Shadow Base, De-Crease

- If you don't want to use an eyeshadow primer, then you can always put foundation on your eyelids. I must admit, this is what I do. It's just more convenient.

3. Brush a lot of powder under the eye and on the upper cheek bone to catch any eyeshadow fall out. This is when the excess eyeshadow falls from your lid to your cheek. The extra face powder catches the eyeshadow. Then you can brush it off your face with a big powder brush. Don't rub any eyeshadow fall out. You'll end up rubbing the shadow into your cheek. This picture is a little exaggerated but you get the idea.

4. Always tap your brush to remove any excess product before applying shadow to the eyes.

5. Don't be heavy handed. Applying a little at a time is better than applying too much and then trying to remove heavy color.

6. Use eyeshadow as eyeliner for a soft look. An angled brush would be best for this.

7. BLEND! BLEND! BLEND! Sweep a big clean brush over the entire lid to blend colors and minimize harsh color lines.

Eyeshadow Tips for a Basic Style

The easiest way to apply eyeshadow is on the lid, crease and brow bone. You'll need 3 colors for this: one medium shade, one light shade and one dark shade.

Step 1 - Sweep the medium shade over the entire lid. Repeat as needed to get the desired depth of color.

Step 3 - Apply the lightest shade to the area under the brow bone. Come down to the crease until you meet the medium shade.

Step 4 - Using a smaller brush, apply a little of the darkest shade into the crease of the lid. At the corners, blend some color down towards the lash line. Repeat to get the desired color.

Types of Eyeshadow

Loose Powder - texture is very fine, colors are usually pearly or shiny

Pressed Powder - you can layer this type of shadow; color stays true all day

Creme - goes into wrinkles and creases; not good for older skin; not light enough to be layered

Eyeshadow Tips/Tricks

To make eyes appear closer together: use dark shadow in the inner corners, light at the outer corners

To make eyes appear farther apart: use light shadow in the inner corners, dark shadow at the outer corners

To minimize big/bulgy eyes: use dark colors along the entire lid up to the crease; use eyeliner pencil on the inside of the eye

To maximize small eyes: use light colors on the lid; use while pencil eyeliner on the inside of the eye

There are millions of eyeshadows on the market. Here are just a few brands worth trying.

You definitely have to experiment with eyeshadows to find what works for you. Hopefully these eyeshadow tips have helped. Always check for cosmetic guarantees when buying makeup so you can return it if the color is a disaster. And remember to have fun with it.
